Capabilities
After a major, protracted time, event, emergency
workers are emotionally charged and operationally focused. It is very
difficult to go from active operations directly back to the station to either
restage or reset the unit for the next call. The demobilization is
inserted into a period between the two. Units are rotated as a whole, to
eliminate any stigmata, through an identified location where they get the
following:
- Basic Nutrition
- It is likely that the emergency workers will be dehydrated and
carbohydrate deficient immediately following an operation. At
this location a snack break is offered which alone helps to dissuade
stress.
- General Information
- Not knowing details heightens stress. During an active
operation, the emergency worker is fully focused on the mission.
This usually creates an information void. Preconceptions and
misperceptions are multiplied by rumor. Correcting basic facts
helps prevent an emotional cascade based on the wrong information.
- Education about Stress and its Management
- This presentation and written information helps the workers to care
for themselves and their coworkers. It also prepares them for
some of the symptoms they may experience and how to manage them.
- Team Contact Information
- Through verbal and written information, attendees are told how to
access the team. They also are given examples of when it may be
time to contact the CISM team for assistance.
