Follow-up and Referral

This is a brief description of the service ...

Key Benefits

bulletIdentify those individuals in which longer term professional care is needed
bulletEnsure that the individual is referred to the most appropriate professional for their needs
bulletThis helps to preserve the individual's functioning and thus their contributions to their organization and to society

Capabilities

Statistically, there will be people who are psychologically traumatized by a Critical Incident.  Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can be one long term result.  In run-of-the-mill traumatic events, 5-10% of individuals exposed can have some degree of PTSD at one year.  After the April 19th, 1995 Murrah Federal Building bombing in Oklahoma City, about 33% of survivors have been identified as having PTSD with another 17% having other long term psychiatric disorders.   In the aftermath of September 11th, 2001, early surveys have identified PTSD rates of 10-20% in those nearby the WTC tragedy or those who worked onsite afterwards.  Rates as high as 50% have been found in those most directly involved (e.g. direct survivors).  These numbers highlight the need to assess those who would benefit from professional counseling so that they do not suffer needlessly.

Identification and Assessment
To identify the minority of individuals who need professional longer term assistance.
Referral
Determine the specifics of the individual's need and resources and refer them to the most appropriate professional or organization.
Encouragement
Encourage the individual to follow through with the therapy need and decrease prejudices against professional counseling.
