Critical Incident Stress Handouts

The handouts listed below can be printed out and used during educational and briefing sessions to give to staff, or for some for the general community, for their reference.

CISM Handout for Emergency Workers

This is our standard handout to describe Critical Incident Stress to Emergency Workers.  It is two-sided and can easily be copied as a two-sided document.  In addition, it is designed to be a tri-fold brochure.

Self-care During Major Events

This is a handout with two pocket sized cards/sheets per printed sheet (depending what it is printed on).  Simply print, cut down the middle and have the worker fold it in half.  It contains information on how to care for themselves during a crisis operation.

Crisis Management Briefing Informational Handout

This handout describes the process of a Crisis Management Briefing.  This is a very useful intervention for large groups of people whether they be staff or community in nature.  It is a form of a Town Meeting which is specifically structured to mitigate/decompress the stress and highly charged environment of a major event.  ***The document is not a do-it-yourself guide.  It is strictly informational and can not substitute for the involvement of trained CISM personnel.***

Communicating in a Crisis:  Risk Communication Guidelines for Public Officials

This document is prepared by the U.S. DHHS/SAMHSA and designed to educate about the proper methods for communication in a major event.  It is critical that a standardized, timely, consistent and accurate posture is presented in dealing with the staff, public and the media.  It is also very important that these messages be consistent, if not identical, to those put forth by government officials, public health entities and peer medical facilities.  This is best accomplished by following the National Incident Management System and specifically the protocols for Joint Information System/Centers.
